03Room envelope

Walls, floors and ceilings: Measure the room envelope before choosing finishes

Measure from the floor to the highest point, then move clockwise around the room. For finishing work, record every surface a material, furniture item, or light fitting will meet—not just the floor area.

    Record each side's measurement, irregularities, sills, level differences, and where any material starts or ends.
  • Ceiling
    Measure the clear height, direction of beams, drops or soffits, existing openings, and location of air conditioning or maintenance outlets.

    Record the width and height, then place doors, windows, projecting elements, and service points as distances from the reference corner.
Do not approve lighting or suspended ceiling before knowing the heights, fixed elements and use of the room.

04Openings

Doors and windows: Dimensions alone are not enough

For each opening, document the width, height, depth, and location from two angles. Also note the direction the door opens, the height of the window sill above the floor, and the presence of a curtain, radiator, air conditioning unit, or electrical panel near it.

Net width and height inside the frame, wall thickness, hinge and opening orientation, available distance behind the door, and expected finished floor height.

The window

Width, height, depth, bottom edge level, distance of sides from corners, opening method, and any obstruction affecting a curtain or furniture unit.

For irregular openings, measure the width or height at more than one point. The supplier approves the final size for manufacturing, but your organized file prevents surprises at the design stage.

Electrical, plumbing, air-conditioning, and lighting: Record each service point precisely

Place every point on the sketch using a horizontal distance from a reference corner and a height from finished-floor level. “Near the wall” is not precise enough for a technician, designer, or supplier.

Before manufacturing the kitchen or any unit, the supplier must review the site after the completion of work affecting the size, such as plasterwork, tiles and marble. The first sketch supports the design, while the final site measurement protects execution.

07Furniture and joinery

Furniture and joinery: Measure how the space is used, not only the piece

Whether the project is a dressing room, library, TV unit, console, hidden door, or bedroom, measuring the wall is not enough. Record clearances for people, drawer and door operation, windows, cleaning access, and the relationship of the unit to switches, sockets, and air-conditioning.
